July '10 Update and New Game Projects PDF Print E-mail
News - Monthly Site Update
Sunday, 18 July 2010 03:19
Well this is a late month update, and for good reasons! I've been rather busy lately with new projects I've become involved with, but let me get into what went wrong in the past two months. As stated before May was rough with finals and all that, but things get better in early June. A bit later in June though I ran into some heavy stress and just didn't get around to working on my articles. Things cleared up at the end of the month, but the research article I had spent my time on couldn't be finished since it required monetary investment on my part, i.e. money I don't have. The rest of June of spent talking to various game developers, some worked out and others didn't, but I think I'm now working with projects that I really like.

So I'm back into game development again! Because of my interest in the field and passion for games I knew I couldn't stay away for long. Most of the projects I'm involved with are somewhat simple as well as my role, but my most ambitious project and role is creating all of the lore for an MMORPG. I'm currently employed to No Limits Designs, the team behind this ambitious project. I'll post more details here once they become available to the public, until then check out the site.

As you can imagine because of my busier schedule there's going to be various changes to this site. I'm not going to stop writing creative articles, but I am going to stop doing full blown game reviews. I simply have to no time to play though a crappy game and analyze the hell out of it; obviously it isn't fair to only properly review the games that I like. However I am toying with the idea of sticking to short game impressions that may or may not have a scoring system. As of right now I'm not big on passive medium at all outside of articles, so don't expect any new movie or novel reviews from me.

Another thing I plan on has to do with the new layout of the site that's coming. Since this is an article site with a blog aspect to it I find it a little annoying that most people refer to my site as a blog. I can't blame them since the majority of recent posts have been blogs, but I really don't want new viewers to get the wrong impression of this site. There's still going to be my little blog posts on this site, but the site it general will appear less like a typical blog site. It's not me alone that's designing the new layout so there will be much discussion on this.

Since my ambitious research article has come to a halt I'm going back to some ideas I've been sitting on for a while. I'm definately going to work on getting more pictures in my articles to keep things interesting and to help explain what I'm talking about (they say a picture tells a thousand words.) My most popular articles seem to be the ones that offer more interesting views on gaming, so expect more of those from me. Being that I'm back into indy game design you can also expect articles of that nature as well.

Oh, my new computer... I can't even begin to explain why it isn't here yet! Rest assured that I am getting it, but I'm not quite sure that I'll get it before my classes start at the end of August. I have a number of projects planned with this new PC and the wait is getting aggravating. I wish there was something I could do to speed things up, but there isn't and I currently don't posses the hardware to do some of the things I want to do.

It's really a bummer that it has been another slow summer for this website, but like a lot of other people I have a lot of things going on in the summer. Since this website is in fact my second source of income I will prioritize it above most of my other projects now that my stress levels have cooled. I think that I've delivered some of my best content this year, but I'm really only just getting started! Expect more from me in the future and hopefully later this month!

Sorry for the long delay between updates. I already mentioned May was going to be rough for me, and it was. For reasons I won’t disclose here I didn’t end up buying my new PC and the Wacom Bamboo tablet I got sucked so bad I had to return it. June started off awkwardly but I think I’m back on track and can get some new articles up. My new PC situation has resolved itself and I should be able to order it by the end of week! Also as soon as I can sell my current laptop I’m ordering a newer faster one. So productivity should really be improved by the end of the month!

I have other reasons for the delay; I’m slowly getting back into game design. Currently I’m working as a writer for a few different indie developers. These are small games and I’m not making any money off them, however this gives me the opportunity to expand my creative thinking. In the end these projects should help me write better fiction. So far I’m having a lot of fun working with someone else boundaries!

After I get my new desktop (and hopefully a better Wacom tablet) I plan on starting a new project with the UDK. I’m interested in it solely for Unreal Kismet, a code free approach to scripting. I may still try to complete a simple project in Game Maker to get my feet on the ground, but the project I have in mind for UDK is far less ambitious than my last one and I want to start learning Unreal Kismet.

Things are starting to look well this month and I still plan on giving the graphic overhaul for this site like I had planned despite the setbacks. I’ll be posting updates as things unfold and now that my life has smoothed over a bit I’ll get some new content up.

Finals! Ah! This week is pretty rough for me right now, but afterwords I'm out of school for the summer! I should have my new computer built and shipped to me by the end of the month hopefully. I also picked up a new Wacom pen tablet to assist me with web design. By the end of the month I should be able to reach a much better level of productivity.

I'm working with a friend to eventually get a whole new layout done for this website. Load speed will dramatically improve I hope. Now that summers here I also have time to finish all those articles and reviews I started! I got a lot of positive feedback from the "I Miss the Graphics of Yesterday" article so I'm looking to do more along the line of that piece of work. More fiction will get done soon I hope.

Over the summer I hope to engage in some new and interesting projects. All will be posted here of course. Until then I got to get through these finals!

4 Years and Still Going! PDF Print E-mail
News - Mini Update

April 27th marked the four year anniversary of foxzero.net's launch! Time flies doesn't it? This site has come a long way, but most of the advancements have come within the last year. For 2010 I am really trying hard to make this site a great source of entertainment, but it is definitely a challenge. FoxZero.net started out as just a place to post all my projects without all the restrictions of community sites, and it still is! However the focus has turned more towards articles and fiction, which are still projects.

It is actually my dream to eventually get a decent number of articles up here to use as a resume that I can submit to "paying" article websites. Unless I'm guaranteed a lot of site hits, I don't see the point in giving out my hard work for free. Even an honorarium is something and I'm seeing more and more sites doing this; I'm getting off topic aren't I? Yes this website is becoming more blog like, though not quite a full blown blog, but it keeps the content flowing between inspirational moments and thus increases the entertainment value of this site. I am after all just one writer; I can't be cranking out in depth articles every day! Especially while juggling college, a job, and hopefully a second job!

I hope you all keep coming back to at least check out my "blog-like" posts. When inspiration hits I always act on it (I just wish it came earlier in the evening), but stress and the realities of being a poor college student always slow the process down. Next year will the five year aniversary of this website, that's a hell of a [small] landmark! I'll definately do something more special than a blog post, I imagine I'll have more money to do so.

Happy anniversary readers!

Periphery Album and Concert! PDF Print E-mail
News - Mini Update
Tuesday, 27 April 2010 18:15
One of the bands I've been following for the past four years, Periphery, has finally released an album on April 20th. In addition to that I finally got to see them live on the 22nd in Wilmington! Man did they kick some ass!

These guys are totally awesome for letting me get a picture with them! I know my camera sucks, but the pic is still awesome! I saw several other great bands too, including This is the Apocalypse. Overall I had a great time. Couldn't have asked for a better birthday present than a chance to meet Periphery and see them play! Now let's take a look at the album...

Yup, Deluxe edition baby! Not that I have a problem with the vocals, I just got to have the limited release! Packaging was totally fucked up though. they crammed everything into this little envelope while charging me $8 USD for shipping and handling. Instead of rolling the autographed poster they folded it up! To top it off the CD itself was so hard to get out that it went flying across the room when it finally did! That pisses me off as now the holographic cover is all dented up. At least the case didn't shatter, but it still looks kind of messed up when out on display. What assholes. I could have gotten all that stuff at the concert and saved about $10 bucks! The two additional T-Shirts I bought at the show. They only had one shirt I wanted in small so I got the other one in medium. I usually where mediums, but these shirts are huge! That's another bummer as the pre-order shirt was a medium too. Well I learned my lesson. No more pre-orders from small labels! Sumerian records can kiss me ass!

Anyways I love how the holographic album cover matches the holographic shirt!

I'm Tyler Favinger and I approve of this album.
